Natural Fiber Research

The world is now aiming to move away from the use of plastic and is shifting towards the use of natural products. In order to develop a sustainable new industry not only to get rid of plastic pollution matter but also help to reduce the poverty problem, Professor Masayuki Sakakibara and his research group are currently collaborating with local people including miners of West Tulabolo VillageBone Bolango Regency (who have indigenous knowledge of creating a traditional net with the fibers of the sugar palm stalks around them), officers of the local government (Bone Bolango Regency), the researchers of SRIREP, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) and State University of Gorontalo, and the private sector such as ESPECMIC Co., Ltd. to manufacture goods such as Sugar Palm nets using the Sugar Palm. They are working together with Bone Bolango Regency and Gorontalo State University to examine potential sales routes and uses for these Sugar Palm nets.

Medical Seminars

Series of seminars entitled  “Japan – ASEAN medical seminars on Human Health Impact of Heavy Metals” have been held since 2019 in order to increase awareness and to promote the understanding of the impacts of pollution and mercury intoxication on human health among the health care professionals, researchers, and general public of Indonesia and Myanmar and other ASEAN members.
